Hey fam! This is the second part of a post I did on the smash community in Santiago- you can find the first post here:

So I had a great morning at the tourney and then everyone went out for lunch before bracket started! Me, Nico, Verse, Gin, Carlitos, and a bunch of other guys all went down the street (they got super lost) BUT we eventually found a really good street hotdog store! My hotdog was super big and had a layer or mayonnaise, guacamole, white cheese, and then ketchup and mustard on it. It was only $1000 pesos (like $1.50) for the hot dog and a cup of Fanta :D IT WAS SO YUMMY!

It was so cheap I though it would be more, so I gave the seller $2,000 for everything confused on how much it cost. Then she asked "Uno o dos?", confused I answered "Dos?" and I heard an explosion of disbelief, confusion, and laughing from the the smashers behind me. "WOAH, really Char?!" "What?? What did I do?" You're gonna tip 100%?!" I laughed and finally understanding what I did, apologized to the vendor and took back a luca (1000 pesos).

When we got back to the tournament I played two sets in amateur bracket and lost them both, but I got to watch Verse and Dark duke it out in Winners Finals! It was really high level play! Both of them would make it all the way through a bracket in AZ for sure. Verse got a lot of wobbles but didn't know how to finish them! It was really funny- a lot of people in the venue were laughing, but it was all just fun. I would say he's about as good as Schwifty in AZ- really good at handoff combos too. Dark is really, really good! His fox is incredibly technical and really fun to watch! I got to play him in pools and he four-stocked me in under two minutes! It was really cool to play such a good player.

At some point during the tourney there was a big crew battle featuring crews of people dressed up as different social classes in Chile! It was incredibly hype and absolutely hilarious to watch. They had a team of "farmers" who wore boots, jeans, and straw hats, there were "rich kids" who wore nice collared shirts, jackets, nice pleated pants, and shiny shoes. There were some other classes as well, and it was CRAZY hype. By the end the entire venue was shouting and laughing and picking up players on their shoulders and running around the venue. It was freaking hilarious. Here's a picture of the crew who won hahaha!:

After grand finals the TOs and stream managers really wanted to give me an interview on stream. Unfortunately OBS screwed up and they weren't able to record an interview. I got to talk with Verse a bit afterwards though about how grand finals went. It was really fun, so next time I get the chance to jump on stream and/or commentate I'm definitely doing it.

After the tourney we all said our goodbyes and packed up the CRTs and people took them home in cars and on the metro. It was really interesting to me to see how tightly knit the Chilean smash scene is. People kept offering to help carry CRTs - you would see two or three guys carrying a setup several blocks to another guy's car! It was really cool to see everyone in good spirits after the tournament and helping each other out so much. In AZ people leave tournaments at different times, and it's kind of expected that you are capable of bringing and taking back your set up by yourself. Because there were pools, an amateur and pro bracket, everyone stayed at the venue the whole day and helped the TO's tear everything down.

After all was packed up and sent home, a bunch of smashers and I went out to a hole-in-the-wall restaurant that sold these giant sandwiches as big as plates! We got three for us all, and the guys paid for me!

Next they all pressured me to go to party with them at Francisco's brother's birthday. I was really tired and almost didn't go but they begged so I went, and it was DEFINITELY the right decision. We had an awesome time hanging out! At the end of the night we all chilled in Francisco's room and passed around his pet snake! It was really cool hahaha! At like 3 am I asked one of them to call me an uber, I kissed everyone goodbye, and I went home in the rain in Verse's jacket hahaha!

I had a great time with the smashers of Santiago. Smashers, I TOTALLY RECOMMEND finding the smash community wherever you travel. You get even more friends all over the world, you get exposed to different ways of running tournaments, new communities and new traditions. It was super enlightening for me as a TO, player, and Smash Sister to seek out the Santiago smash community!

That's all for tonight folks! I may write a giant thank you letter or some sort of fancy writeup for the whole Chilean/Santiago smash community soon. They've treated me extremely well - buying me food, drinks, paying for my ubers, helping me with homework, giving me rain jackets (to steal for a week and then give back to a very wet Versetti dripping from the rain in the middle of the subway station hahaha!).. But seriously, this is one of the best communities I've ever been welcomed into, and I need to do everything I can to thank them.

I hope you are enjoying my stories Straight Outta Santiago!

Love you all!

Love,

[CHAR]
